Blueberry Bushes

Does this not look amazing!?  Blueberries, blackberries and vanilla yogurt. Ymmmmmm!  Delicious any time of day.

We just moved into a new house and worked with a landscaper to design the yard and pick out plants.  One of the things I really wanted was to plant some fruit trees/bushes.  I would love to have some lime or lemon trees and be able to pick fresh limes/lemons any time.  However, our winters here are too cold and they would never live.  I asked about peach and cherry trees and the landscaper told me that they would have to be constantly sprayed with insecticide in order to produce much fruit.  I don’t want that kind of hassle.

So….what about blueberries?  That, he said I could do!  We planted 6 blueberry bushes and I am ecstatic about it.  I LOVE blueberries and the thought of just going into my back yard and picking fresh blueberries puts a huge smiles on my face!

My girls love blueberries too.  They are kind of expensive here in the grocery stores – especially in winter – but I try to still buy them because the girls love them and I know they are healthy.  The other day as my daughter Avery was eating blueberries she said that eating them made her feel like a bear……..  Interesting.  I guess she thinks that all bears eat mostly berries?

Another reason I am excited about the blueberry bushes is they are nostalgic to me.  I grew up in a house where we had a row of blueberry bushes down the entire length of one side of the lot.  They separated our lot from our neighbor’s lot.  They had the biggest, plumpest, sweetest blueberries you can imagine!  As kids, my sister, brother and myself would play outside with the neighborhood kids and we could snack on blueberries any time.  It was wonderful!  I could eat all day!  And nearly did.  In addition to that, we have a backdoor neighbor who had a great grapevine.  Half of it was scuppernong grapes  and the other half was muscadine.  (images in order)
